On January 19 IBM announced financial results for fiscal 1992 ending
December 31. The loss of $4.97 billion was the biggest loss recorded in
corporate history. Revenues were almost flat at $64.52 billion (compared
to $64.77 billion for 1991).
Revenue breakdown was announced as follows (in millions):

(*) includes $11.645 billion in charges for workforce and capacity
reduction during 1992. IBM cut in excess of 40,000 jobs in 1992.
Chairman John Akers stated that IBM will take aggressive actions to improve
competitiveness and profitability; the actions will include reallocating
resources to growth businesses, increasing the autonomy of business units
and further reduction of costs.
Growth areas include client-server computing, networking, RISC technology
and multimedia on the technology side and also include consulting, systems
integration and services.
IBM also has announced plans to cut an additional 25,000 jobs in 1993.
